Alan J. Rohwedder, 94, went home to be with his Lord on Aug. 25, 2023, with his wife by his side.
His visitation will be held on Thursday, Aug. 31, 2023, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Dawson Funeral Services in Olin. His memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 1, 2023, at Dawson Funeral Services in Olin. A private family graveside service will be held at the Olin Cemetery.
Alan was born to Hans and Sophia (Latare) Rohwedder on July 24, 1929. As a young boy he rode his pony to Madison Village School and has memories of being the “waterboy” who had to carry water from the neighboring farm. He moved to the Olin School District in eighth grade and graduated with the Class of 1947. He drove school bus as a high schooler and said he would never drive a school bus again. Even as a young boy he kept his bicycle spotless, which remained a tradition with all of the vehicles he ever owned.
Alan married Beverly Ann Swenson on March 20, 1949, at the “Little Brown Church” and they celebrated 74 years in March. Alan and Beverly farmed and Alan drove truck on the side for Levsen Bros and Smiler James, taking cattle to the Chicago Stock Yards on Sundays and Tuesdays. In 1987 he retired from farming and started driving truck until his next retirement.
He served on the Clarence Coop Board, Olin Telephone Co. Board, Olin Cemetery Association, was a member of the Morley First United Methodist Church and was a charter member and EMT for the Olin Ambulance. Alan was quick-witted, fun to be with and always ready with a “oneliner.” Alan and Beverly were avid motorcycle riders and put 25,000-plus miles per year on their many Gold Wings and even went to Alaska on their bike, twice.
Surviving are his wife Beverly; children, Ned (Cindy) Rohwedder, Rex (Pat) Rohwedder and Polly McClure (Jack); nine grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.
Cards of condolences may be directed to the family at Dawson Funeral Services, Attn: Alan Rohwedder Family, P.O. Box 258, Wyoming, IA 52362.
