Ahmad, Tim
Tim Ahmad, 43, of Iowa City, died Friday, Jan. 11, 2013, at his home. A Memorial Gathering for family and friends will be Wednesday, Jan. 16, from 4 to 7 p.m. at The Kirkwood Room, next to Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City, where a Time of Sharing will be held at 6 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Iowa City Parks and Recreation Foundation or The Nature Conservancy, both in c/o of PO Box 167, Iowa City, IA 52244.
Tim was born July 14, 1969, in Cedar Falls, Iowa, the son of Colleen Costolo and Iqbal Ahmad. He and his parents moved to St. Louis when Tim was four. When Tim was 11 he and his mother returned to Iowa City, where he graduated from West High School in 1987. Tim attended Iowa State University and later received an associate degree from Kirkwood Community College.
Tim was employed at Mercy Hospital for over 18 years. During that time a Mercy physician encouraged Tim to become a surgical technician, a career which he began in 2004. Tim loved his work in the OR and took pride in being the best he could be.
Tim was an outdoor enthusiast. From his first camping experiences in St. Louis and with his Iowa City Scout trips west, he loved nature. In high school he joined the University rock climbing club and climbed Devil's Lake in Wisconsin and other sites. He took several trips with his friends to the Southwest. Last year, on his way to visit family in Arizona, Tim camped and explored Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico. For many years Tim has been an avid disc golfer and kayaker. He and his friends kayaked at several Eastern Iowa locations, including the Turkey and Maquoketa rivers.
Tim was smart, funny and kind. He will always be remembered as one of the good guys by those left behind. Tim was loved.
Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Colleen and Richard Henderson of Guttenberg; his uncle, Larry Costolo of Iowa City; his aunts, Marti (Ron) Hendricks of Solon, Milly Swenka of Coralville, Terri (Hal) Larson of Muscatine, Cheryl Costolo (Rick Hill) of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Ellie Carter of Iowa City; cousins and many good friends.
