Abby Zierath, 101, of Cedar Rapids, passed away on Thursday, Aug. 10, 2017, at Cottage Grove Place. A Mass will be on Monday, Aug. 14, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Matthew's Catholic Church. A visitation will be at 9:30 a.m. at St. Matthew's.
Abby was born on Oct. 29, 1915, the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth (Lawlor) Kilcoin. Abby lived a happy childhood in Victor, Iowa, and graduated from St. John's Catholic School in 1933. She attended Mount St. Clare College in Clinton, Iowa, and then attended Iowa State Teachers College. She taught in rural Victor for two years. She then went to work for the Hickey Brothers Co. as a bookkeeper in several cities in the United States. She spent her last years working at Rockwell Collins and National Oats in Cedar Rapids.
In 1970, she married Loyal Zierath at St. Bridget Church in Victor, and they enjoyed many years together in Cedar Rapids, and spending winters in Phoenix while visiting her sister, Terese, and family.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Loyal; sisters, Terese (Tom) Ryan and Acquin (Ted Sr.) Bodensteiner; brother, Bill; nieces, Martha Ryan and Nicki Ryan; and nephews, Tim, Terry and Ted Bodensteiner.
Left to cherish Abby's memories are nieces and nephews, Margaret and John Stirniman of Cedar Rapids, Doyle Ryan of Las Vegas, Tom Ryan of Scottsdale, Ariz., Acquin Ryan of San Diego, and Elizabeth and John Cyr of Surprise, Ariz.; stepson, David and Mary Jane Zierath of Middleton, Wis.; stepdaughter, Trish and Gene JuVette of Rockwell City, Iowa; and many loving grandnieces and nephews.
