Your guide to Eastern Iowa Veterans Day events

The following is a list of Veterans Day events scheduled Friday and Saturday.

LINN COUNTY

What: Doug Beed Book Reading

When: Noon to 2 p.m. Friday

Where: Veterans Memorial Building, 50 Second Avenue Bridge, Cedar Rapids

Details: Author and veteran Doug Beed reads from his book, 'Chasing Understanding in the Jungles of Vietnam, My Year as a 'Black Scarf' '

Cost: Free

What: Area Metro Veterans Council Veterans Day Ceremony

When: 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday

Where: Veterans Memorial Building, 50 Second Avenue Bridge, Cedar Rapids

Details: Ceremony includes a presentation of the colors, music, a guest speaker and a volley salute. The Spirit of Iowa Tribute Bell, sponsored by Kaplan University, will be available for viewing in front of the building until 2 p.m. The building's exhibits are open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

JOHNSON COUNTY

What: Screening of 'All Quiet on the Western Front'

When: Noon Friday

Where: FilmScene, 118 E. College St. No. 101, Iowa City

Details: Presented by Iowa Veterans for Peace, this 1930 film follows a group of German schoolboys talked into enlisting by their teacher at the beginning of World War I. They are assigned to the Western Front, where they see the harsh realities of combat.

Cost: $6.50 and $7.50

What: Veterans for Peace Armistice Day Observance

When: 10:45 a.m. Saturday

Where: The Pentacrest in downtown Iowa City

Details: Old Capitol bell will be rung 11 times just like on Nov. 11, 1918. After the ceremony, those in attendance will go to the Congregational United Church of Christ, 30 N. Clinton St., for refreshments and speakers sharing their feelings about peace.

OTHER

What: Screening of 'Joyeux Noel'

When: 2 p.m. Saturday

Where: Figge Auditorium at Herbert Hoover Presidential Library-Museum, 210 Parkside Drive, West Branch.

Details: This 2005 film recounts an actual event that took place in December 1914 when the lead singer of the Berlin Imperial Opera company was sent to the front lines during World War I. The singing to German soldiers led French soldiers to rise from their trenches to applaud.

Cost: Veterans receive free admission. Others are admitted with a paid museum admission of $10 for those ages 16-61; $5 for those 62 and older and college students; $3 for children ages 6-15 and free for those 5 and younger and members.
