CORALVILLE – A man who escaped from work release in December gave his twin brother's name when stopped for an open container violation this morning in Coralville.
Derrikk T. Crawford, 21, was riding in a car with three other people at 2:30 a.m. Friday on Commerce Drive in Coralville when police pulled over the driver, Roger Anderson, on suspicion of drunken driving, Coralville Police Chief Barry Bedford said.
When told he was being charged with having an open container of alcohol in the car, Crawford told police his name was Jordan Crawford.
Later, Johnson County deputies discovered Jordan Crawford is the name of Derrikk Crawford's twin brother, who is incarcerated at the Anamosa State Penitentiary on charges of second-degree robbery and failure to appear out of Jefferson County.
“Derrikk gave his brother's name as he (Derrikk) is wanted for escape, and wanted by the Iowa Department of Corrections,” the Johnson County complaint states.
That's true, said Fred Scaletta, spokesman for the corrections department. Derrikk Crawford was on work release in Burlington on a charge of conspiracy to commit a felony when he escaped Dec. 30.
Derrikk Crawford now faces additional charges of tampering with records and open container. He is being held in the Johnson County Jail on $5,000 cash bond.
Anderson, 25, of Fairfield, was charged with open container. Chelsea Herman, 19, and Kaitlyn Minealt, 18, both of Fairfield, were charged with open container as a minor.
