Woman rescued from Cedar Rapids manufactured home fire

Mar. 29, 2011 6:17 pm
Cedar Rapids firefighters rescued one woman from a fire at a mobile home park Tuesday morning.
The fire at 2506 Canyon St. SW, in the Grand View Village community, broke out at about 10:30 a.m. Witnesses say a neighbor who lives behind the still-unidentified victim was coming over to walk her dog. She saw thick black smoke from a back bedroom and ran to another mobile home to call for help.
Rescuers fought zero visibility conditions from the smoke inside in order to find the woman. Neighbors said she was disabled, although no one knew exactly what kind of disability or if that would have prevented her from escaping the fire on her own. The woman was covered in dark smoke or soot from the home and was carried out by firefighters, according to a witness.
Cedar Rapids acting fire captain Jason Andrews said the fire victim was talking with her rescuers as she was taken out of her mobile home. Her identity and condition aren't yet known.
