Woman gets jail time for harassing Iowa's Clayborn
Feb. 25, 2010 2:14 pm
A former Iowa City woman convicted of harassing Iowa defensive end Adrian Clayborn during a football game last fall has been sentenced to 30 days in jail.
Brittney Mears, who now lives in New London, was sentenced Wednesday. She will spend less than a week in jail after the judge suspended part of her sentence and gave her credit for time served. The judge also extended an order barring her for contacting Clayborn for five years.
Mears was accused of harassing Clayborn during an Oct. 3 game against Arkansas State. A jury in December convicted her of third-degree harassment.
During sentencing, Mears' attorney, Stephen Greenleaf, argued against sentencing her beyond time served.
Greenleaf acknowledged he and Mears were disappointed but says they haven't decided whether to appeal.
