A Williamsburg teenager was killed and three others injured in a three-vehicle accident along Interstate 80 near Oxford on Tuesday.
Melissa Street, 14, died when the van she was riding in was rear-ended by a pickup in the eastbound lanes around 4:35 p.m., according to the Iowa State Patrol. The van and another vehicle involved in the wreck had come to a stop on the interstate near an earlier accident. A Johnson County Sheriff's patrol car was on the left shoulder with its emergency lights activated.
The pickup, driven by Jorge A. Ortiz, 43, of Washington, did not slow down and slammed into the back of the van, authorities said. Ortiz was injured and taken by ambulance to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.
The driver of the van, Karen Dye, 52, of Williamsburg, and another passenger, Michael D. Street, 18, were also transported to the Iowa City hospital for treatment of injuries, authorities said. The crash pushed the van into a pickup driven by Dan M. Earhart, 59, of Solon, but he was not hurt.
Authorities said the earlier accident that led to the slowdown happened when a car hit an icy spot caused by blowing snow and rolled onto its top in the median. A 17-year-old suffered minor injuries, but the person's name was not released.
