MARENGO - A Williamsburg man accused of killing his girlfriend's child pleaded not guilty this week in Iowa District Court.
Cody J. Stevenson, 29, is charged with first-degree murder. He remains in jail on a $1 million cash bond pending trial. A criminal complaint shows Stevenson hit the child, who was in his care, 'at least 3 to 4 times” in the abdominal area with a closed fist on June 30. The child died from injuries July 3.
The deceased child isn't identified by name in court records.
Court records also show Stevenson has also been ordered to not have contact with another minor child.
If convicted, Stevenson faces life in prison without parole.
The written not guilty plea filed Wednesday shows Stevenson waived his right to speedy trial within 90 days. A trial date hasn't been set at this time.
