UPDATE: Fayette County authorities would like to know why the peacock crossed the road.
Two vehicles collided Tuesday afternoon on Highway 18 just west of Clermont, and when deputies arrived, they heard the unusual explanation: A peacock had been in the roadway.
According to the sheriff's office, Gloria Becker, 57, of Hawkeye, was westbound in a minivan around 4:20 p.m. when she slowed down for the peacock. John MacInnis, 32, of West Union, was behind the Becker vehicle and was unable to stop in time. MacInnis' vehicle rear-ended Becker's vehicle.
No injuries were reported - to the drivers or the peacock. Damage to both vehicles was estimated at $2,500.
Sheriff Marty Fisher said the full-sized peacock was one of several that live at a residence nearby. He said the owner could face charges.
“We're looking into it,” Fisher said. “Here in Iowa, with livestock, the owners are responsible for them.”
Fisher said livestock occasionally escape and wander onto the roadways, but they usually deal with cattle, horses or pigs.
“We are obviously Iowa, and especially here in northeast Iowa, there are more livestock owners,” said Fisher, who has been with the sheriff's office for more than 35 years. “I would have to say it's the first incident I can recall with a peacock.”
