West Union man killed, wife critically hurt in motorcycle crash

A West Union man was killed and his wife was listed in critical condition after a motorcycle crash Wednesday, authorities said.
Martin Johnson, 52, died from injuries from the crash on Highway 56, about three miles southeast of West Union, around 5 p.m. Wednesday. According to the Fayette County Sheriff's Office, Johnson was driving a motorcycle and attempted to pass a pickup pulling a drain vacuum near an intersection.
The pickup driver, Andrew Meyer, 29, of West Union, started to turn east onto 200th Street and the two vehicles collided. Johnson and his wife, Dawn Johnson, 44, of West Union, who was a passenger on the motorcycle, were thrown off, authorities said.
Both were airlifted to a Waterloo hospital, where Martin Johnson was later pronounced dead. Dawn Johnson was listed in critcal condition, authorities said.
An investigation is continuing.
