Waterloo police suspect hit-and-run accident caused woman's death
Apr. 9, 2012 11:25 am
Waterloo authorities have released the name of a woman whose body was found on a sidewalk, likely the victim of a hit-and-run driver.
The body was found near the intersection of West Mullan Avenue and Washington Street around 4 a.m. Monday.
An officer saw personal items scattered in the street and stopped to investigate. That's when he noticed the body.
The woman has been identified as 59-year-old Becky Lawless, who lived several blocks south of the accident site.
An autopsy on the body is scheduled for Tuesday.
Police haven't reported any arrests.
Bill Koch's driveway was roped off with police tape as part of the investigation. He said he didn't notice a thing overnight.
"Around 5 this morning there was a knock on the door and I answered it and it was a police officer, and he asked me if I had heard anything or seen anything," Koch said. "I said I had not, I have not heard anything I was not aware of what had happened."
Waterloo police are asking anyone with more information to contact them.
