CEDAR RAPIDS -- The Washington High School student senate will present a check for $8,500 to "Especially for You" Monday morning during an all-school assembly.
"Especially for You" is a local organization that supports breast caner services for anyone in need.
The money was raised through the sale of about 800 "Warriors Fight Breast Cancer" pink t-shirts and the online auction of pink football jerseys.
Family members of several football players have been diagnosed with breast cancer. Because of this, the 2009 Warrior football team dedicated the Oct. 9 game to the fight against breast cancer.
Other Washington athletic teams also got involved. The volleyball team ordered pink jerseys for the Oct. 6 match against Linn-Mar while the women's cross country team wore pink ribbons in their hair for the Oct. 8 Mississippi Valley Conference Super Meet. The men's cross country team unveiled special pink jerseys for the same event.
The women's swimming/diving team wore pink caps at their swim meet that week and the varsity show choir work pink t-shirts at their season opening concert Oct. 8.
The Warrior Marching Band wore pink arm bands for its performance at the Washington vs. Jefferson football game.
All of the teams will be recognized at Monday's assembly. The entire student body, and school faculty and staff, are encouraged to wear pink to the assembly.
