CEDAR RAPIDS — A Winter Storm Warning has been issued for parts of the KCRG-TV9 viewing area until 9 p.m. Sunday.
Snow will begin to develop in southern Iowa Saturday afternoon. With temperatures above freezing, it probably will mix with rain to start, but will transition to all snow as the afternoon progresses. This precipitation will spread northward during the evening. Snow will continue Saturday into Sunday, tapering off late in the day.
This will be heavy, wet snow with many areas getting between six and nine inches by Sunday afternoon.
Wind will start to increase behind the system on Sunday with wind speeds likely between 20 and 30 miles per hour. Blowing snow will become an issue even as snow gets lighter late Sunday, causing snow to continually cover roads.
Travel will be most difficult Saturday evening through Sunday morning when the heaviest snow falls, and will continue to be difficult Sunday afternoon and evening as blowing snow takes over. Some iciness is also possible Saturday afternoon and evening as the snow will begin a bit more slushy, followed by falling temperatures and additional snow falling on top.
The KCRG-TV9 First Alert Storm Team will continue to monitor this winter storm and provide updates as more information comes to us. You can follow updates here, on Facebook at www.facebook.com/kcrgweather, or on Twitter using the handle @KCRG_FirstAlert or hashtag #kcrgwx.
