CEDAR RAPIDS – Firefighters were en route to their nearby station when they said they saw a female driver crash into the Interstate 380 overpass over First Avenue.
At 6:44 p.m. the crew saw a maroon 2003 Saturn eastbound on First Avenue, near L Street SW, leave the roadway and crash into the massive support post of the bridge, a fire official at Station No. 1 said.
Cedar Rapids police Sgt. Cristy Hamblin said 50-year-old Kathy Cummings-Graesch, of Cedar Rapids, was taking a wide turn onto First Avenue from Third Street NW when she clipped a street sign and struck the post.
The crew immediately went to assist her and confirmed the victim suffered from non-life threatening injuries, but was transported by Area Ambulance to St. Luke's Hospital.
Keiller said he guessed Cummings-Graesch was driving around 30 mph before impact.
Cummings-Graesch was charged with OWI, Failure to Maintain Control and driving without insurance.
