University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics officials said an oversight that led to missed billings has been discovered and will be fixed.
The amount of unbilled revenue was not immediately available. Hospital leaders are still making a presentation on other matters to the state Board of Regents and therefore not immediately available to provide more details on the audit findings.
Hospital officials gave an update Wednesday afternoon to the state Board of Regents during a meeting in Iowa City about an internal audit that discovered the problem.
“It goes without saying how disappointed we were” in the audit findings, hospital Chief Executive Officer Ken Kates said. “We take these findings very seriously.”
A hospital team has been assembled to determine what caused the problem so it won't happen again, Kates said.
Primary findings of the internal audit found missed billings, inadequate monitoring of billing staff, and inadequate documentation of patient vitals in accordance with hospital policy.
Hospital leaders expect to complete their plan for correcting the problem by September.
