UI taking action in reported sex assault, victim won't pursue charges

Nov. 4, 2013 3:10 pm
The University of Iowa is taking “actions in accordance with university policies” after a student reported being sexual assaulted in a residence hall room over the weekend.
UI housing and dining staff members on Sunday evening were informed of the assault, which reportedly occurred sometime late Saturday into early Sunday, according to UI warning issued Monday.
Officials know the identities of both involved parties, who were acquaintances, and they're “proceeding with actions in accordance with university policies,” according to the warning.
The student involved asked not to proceed with criminal charges, and officials say UI police are respecting that decision and not investigating the incident. UI police are, however, warning students about sexual assaults between acquaintances.
According to UI police, one in every four to five college women become the victim of sexual assault or attempted sexual assault nationwide. And the most common type of assaults are those perpetrated by dates or acquaintances, according to UI police.
Students can cut their risk of becoming a victim by being aware that alcohol and drugs can make them more vulnerable, according to UI officials. Students also are advised to “trust your instincts” and “communicate your own limits clearly.”
Anyone who is sexually assaulted has several options, cataloged by UI police.
“If you choose a police investigation of this crime, we will investigate, provide support and offer related services,” according to UI police. “Sex offenses are treated with the greatest seriousness on our campus.”
Victims are informed of the outcomes of institutional disciplinary proceedings and supported through criminal proceedings, if they choose to go that route, according to the UI warning.
UI police also offer rape aggression defense courses as well as personal safety information through a crime specialist. Visit the
police website for more information.
