UI issues statement in wake of incidents near Hillcrest
Apr. 20, 2011 9:36 am
The University of Iowa released a statement to residents of the Hillcrest Residence Hall in the wake of racially-charged incidents in that area over the weekend.
Here's a copy of the statement from Tom Rocklin, Vice President for Student Life at the UI:
"Over the last several days, three disturbing incidents have been reported in and around Hillcrest Residence Hall. In each case, one or more unidentified people allegedly shouted racial slurs at African American students passing by. Although this appears to be an isolated situation, the university community at large – and I personally – find such behavior absolutely unacceptable. The behavior may constitute a violation of university policy, and if the perpetrators are identified and further investigation by student life staff establishes a policy violation, those individuals will be subject to sanctions under the Code of Student Life and to possible criminal charges.
"The University of Iowa is committed to maintaining an environment that recognizes the inherent worth and dignity of every person, and that fosters tolerance, sensitivity, understanding, and mutual respect. I ask each of you to consider how you can help create and maintain such an environment."
