U.S. education secretary will visit Cedar Rapids
Sep. 1, 2015 6:16 pm
U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan will visit Roosevelt Middle School in Cedar Rapids on Sept. 15, his office announced this week.
Duncan's visit is part of a sixth annual back-to-school bus tour covering six states over five days.
At Roosevelt, he will participate in a roundtable on teacher leadership and shadow a teacher coaching session.
The Cedar Rapids Community School District is starting the second year of a teacher leadership system funded by a state grant.
Teacher leadership and compensation grants are a central part of the education reform package Gov. Terry Branstad introduced after he was elected in 2010. They allow some teachers to take part- or full-time leave from classroom teaching to coach other teachers or lead curriculum development,
Duncan also will visit North High School in Des Moines on Sept. 14.
