Assistant U.S. Attorney Ian Thornhill and Magistrate Judge and attorney Karen Egerton were nominated Friday for the next Sixth Judicial District Judge.
The two nominees' names have been sent to Gov. Chet Culver who appoint one within 30 days. Thornhill or Egerton will replace Thomas Koehler who retired in July after 30 1/2 years on the bench.
There were 10 applicants for the vacancy. They were interviewed by the Judicial Nominating Commission on Friday.
Thornhill, 41, of Cedar Rapids, has been an assistant U.S. Attorney for seven years. He also served four years as a U.S. Navy Judge Advocate General while on active duty.
Egerton, 50, of Coralville, has been a magistrate judge with the Sixth Judicial since 2005. She also has been in private practice with Stein, Moore Egerton and Weideman in Iowa City since 2001 and served as an assistant Johnson County attorney from 1996 to 2001.
