Police said two children were seriously hurt Thursday evening in a single-vehicle crash in Cedar Rapids.
Around 8 p.m., officers were dispatched to 429 Stoney Creek Rd. NW for an accident. They learned Jack Hanson, 37, of Cedar Rapids, was northbound in the subdivision when he lost control and his sport-utility vehicle hit a parked car and a basketball hoop before striking a tree.
Sgt. Cristy Hamblin said Hanson's 7-year-old son and 8-year-old daughter suffered "very serious" head and internal injuries in the crash. She said it appeared they were wearing their seat belts. They were taken to St. Luke's Hospital and later transferred to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, police said.
Information about the medical conditions of the children Friday was not immediately available. They were expected to live, police said.
Hanson was transported to St. Luke's Hospital for his injuries, as well.
Police said Hanson and his children were on the way home from a school program. An older son was following him when the crash happened, and took the two children to their home a few blocks away to meet an ambulance.
The estimated total of the damage caused to the parked car and basketball hoop, both owned by Peter Watson, was estimated at $3,500, police said.
An investigation was continuing into what caused the crash, police said. Hamblin said no charges had been filed as of Friday morning.
