CEDAR RAPIDS - A May trial is set for 18-year-old Dmontrey R. Redmond who is charged with attempted murder in what investigators say was a drug deal dispute.
Redmond filed a written plea of not guilty and his trial is set May 26 in Linn County District Court. Redmond is charged with attempted murder and first-degree robbery. According to court documents, Redmond shot Alexander Ledvina, 18, Jan. 27, during a drug deal. Redmond went with two others who planned to purchase $290 of marijuana from Ledvina, but Redmond attempted to rob him of money when they met in the parking lot of St. Jude's Catholic Church.
Ledvina told investigators he tried to drive away but Redmond jumped in his car and shot him while the two were fighting, according to a search warrant affidavit. Ledvina then crashed his car and Redmond got out and he and the other two men outside the car ran away before Ledvina called 911.
Ledvina was taken to the hospital with gunshot wounds to his right forearm and his right and left thighs, according to the affidavit.
Another man with Redmond that night corroborated Ledvina's account of the incident, according to the affidavit.
Police officers found a 9 mm gun on Redmond when they arrested him Feb. 6 but couldn't confirm if it was the same gun involved in the shooting, according to the affidavit.
