Trial reset to October for Nebraska man charged in Iowa rest stop shooting

The trial for a Nebraska man accused of killing an Interstate 80 maintenance worker a year ago this month will be continued to October 17, a judge ruled Monday.
Peter Riggs, 32, of Columbus, Neb., charged with first-degree murder, is accused of shooting and killing Jeffrey McAdam, 46, of Victor, on May 29 in the men's restroom at the I-80 Victor rest stop. His trial was set June 6 in Iowa County District Court.
Defense filed a motion for a continuance because issues still remain such as scheduling expert witnesses and depositions.
The state resisted because of the length of time this case has been pending, saying the defense has had adequate time to address scheduling issues.
Sixth Judicial District Judge Nancy Baumgartner granted the continuance based on the defense's argument and because she is still considering the change of venue motion filed a few weeks ago, which could also delay the trial. She has checked with some counties, including Scott, about the possibility of moving the trial but hasn't found one at this time.
Riggs, raising his cuffed hands in the air, said he was "f---- tired of waiting" after Baumgartner informed the attorneys she would grant the continuance.
"They need to have this or just put me away forever," Riggs said.
Johnson County Chief Public Defender Peter Persaud tried to stop Riggs from saying anything further, then Baumgartner quickly adjourned the hearing so Persaud could take Riggs outside the courtroom to talk with him.
When they came back into the courtroom, Riggs seemed calm and said he "didn't care" about the new court date.
Peter Riggs.
