Tonight's council meeting will provide an update of progress and planning on flood-damaged city buildings
Oct. 21, 2009 10:15 am
At its work session this evening, the City Council will get an update from city staff on the renovations at some flood-damaged city facilities and about the planning in the works to help the council make decisions about some of the city's major flood-damaged buildings.
The latter include the city's Central Fire Station, Public Library and animal control shelter, all of which are expected to get new homes at new sites.
Many questions remain about another major building, the city's Veterans Memorial Building, long the home of City Hall. The city continues to run its City Hall out of a building in an office park at 3851 River Ridge Dr. NE. It holds council meetings an auditorium at AEGON USA, 4333 Edgewood Rd. NE.
Tonight's discussion will serve as a prelude to a third round of open houses, slated for Nov. 17 and 18, on options for the major buildings. Tonight's discussion, though, might provide some glimpse into the council's wishes on likely new sites for the library, fire station and animal shelter.
The city's open houses give the public a chance to weigh in on the decisions, but, in truth, the number of written comments related to any particular city building is limited to a couple hundred at most in a city of 125,000.
