TOLEDO- A 44-year-old Tama County man faces a variety of charges after allegedly assaulting a girlfriend, stealing a semi-tanker truck and smashing it into other vehicles and two mobile homes.
Authorities said Ward Harold Wehrman allegedly assaulted his girlfriend in Tama Tuesday afternoon and drove her car to Malcom. That car was damaged and Wehrman then allegedly stole a semi-tanker trailer from a business and drove back to Toledo Tuesday night.
Police said Wehrman drove the semi to the Arrowhead Mobile Home Park where he was living with his girlfriend. Police say there Wehrman smashed the truck into two vehicles and then drove between two mobile homes. Police said both mobile homes sustained serious damage and one was knocked off a foundation by the truck and tanker. Police said there were people inside the two mobile homes at the time but no one was injured.
Police did not say why Wehrman allegedly drove into the mobile homes. But other residents said Wehrman's girlfriend lived in a mobile home next to the two that were damaged. Those residents speculated Wehrman may have been aiming at his girlfriend's mobile home and hit the other two by accident.
Wehrman was arrested by authorities in a rural barn after he apparently abandoned the truck on a gravel road.
He was charged with domestic abuse causing injury and stealing a vehicle by Tama Police. Toledo authorities added charges of first degree theft, first degree criminal mischief, OWI, careless driving and leaving the scene of an accident.
