The Toledo city clerk charged with child endangerment waived her preliminary hearing this week, and her husband charged with sexually abusing the same child will be arraigned Thursday in Tama County District Court.
City Clerk Carolyn Brownfield, 68, pleaded not guilty in writing to child endangerment, an aggravated misdemeanor, Sept. 6. She was released without bond. She is accused of knowingly permitting the continuing sexual abuse of a child, according to the criminal complaint.
Mayor Pamela Wood said Wednesday Carolyn Brownfield is on administrative leave with pay pending her trial.
Her husband Gary Brownfield, 68, was charged with second-degree sexual abuse July 29, and he was released on a $25,000 bond. He is accused of sexually abusing a child under the age of 12 on July 11, according to the trial information.
A guardian ad litem was appointed for the child Aug. 5, according to court records. A no contact order for the child was also issued against Gary Brownfield.
