UPDATE: A CrimeStoppers tip on an armed robbery led to the arrest of a 21-year-old Iowa City man, because he was wearing the same lanyard as the suspect at the time of the incident.
Iowa City police suspected Jonathan T. Bogaard, of 331 S Johnson St. No. 5, had robbed the L&M Mighty Shop, at 504 E Burlington St. last Wednesday, but could not connect him to the crime, they said.
Records indicate at 11:46 p.m. Dec. 14, a white male subject wearing a ski mask had displayed a knife to the clerk and demanded money from the cash register. The subject took $200 to $250 cash from the register drawer, police said.
According to reports, an anonymous person identified the suspect in the photo as Bogaard, who denied robbing the convenience store. However, Bogaard had a lanyard in his front right pant pocket that appeared to be similar to one the suspect wore during the robbery.
When confronted about using a weapon, Bogaard admitted committing the theft, Iowa City police Sgt. Denise Brotherton said. He also admitted to three car burglaries within the same week as the robbery, according to police reports.
He is charged with first-degree robbery, a Class B felony; assault with a weapon and going armed with intent, both Class D felonies; and fourth-degree theft, a serious misdemeanor.
Bogaard was being held at the Johnson County Jail Tuesday on a $100,000 bond.
