CORALVILLE — Coralville police said three people are in custody after a morning bank robbery took place in front of dozens of witnesses.
Police said three men took part in the robbery of Bank of the West off Second Street in Coralville shortly before 11 a.m. The bank sits at a busy intersection near the Coralville Hy-Vee.
Two men entered the bank and demanded cash, with at least one showing a handgun, according to a release from Coralville Police Chief Barry Bedford. The pair left the bank on foot with an unknown amount of money, Bedford said.
Lt. Shane Kron of the Coralville Police Department said witnesses in a nearby apartment complex noted the license plate number and description of a suspicious vehicle in the Bank of the West parking lot. They notified responding officers and authorities broadcast a statewide alert for the vehicle, according to the release.
A short time later, an Iowa State Patrol trooper spotted the car near Walcott heading east toward Davenport, Kron said. The trooper took the three occupants into custody and money was recovered.
The three people inside, 30-year-old James King, 24-year-old Benji Shaw and 38-year-old Sedrick Dudley, were arrested and charged with first-degree robbery, a Class B felony. King and Dudley are both from Joliet, Illinois and Shaw is from Decatur, Illinois, according to Coralville Police.
