Three people were injured when a driver misjudged an intersection with stoplights as a four-way stop, authorities said.
Emergency personnel responded to Highway 13 and Secrist Road around 4:10 p.m. Wednesday when a pickup and a sport-utility vehicle collided.
Barbara H. Schlachter, 64, of Iowa City, was westbound on Secrist Road in the SUV and stopped when she got to the intersection with Highway 13. According to the Iowa State Patrol, Schlachter was not familiar with the area and thought it was a four-way stop.
After stopping, she proceeded through the red light and her SUV was struck by a southbound pickup driven by Adam J. Langreck, 25, of Fairfax. The pickup ran off the road and struck a utility pole.
Schlachter and Langreck were both taken by ambulance to Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids. A passenger in Langreck's vehicle, Jon W. Wylie, 32, of Cedar Rapids, was taken by air ambulance to Mercy. Condition reports on those involved were not immediately available.
All three of the people involved were wearing seat belts, authorities said.
Highway 100/Secrist Road was shut down until the wreckage could be cleared out of the way.
