Few details were released Monday about the death of a Cedar Rapids 16-year-old struck by a sport-utility vehicle along Interstate 380 near Urbana.
The youth, whose name wasn't released, was struck while he walked south along I-380's northbound lanes near the Urbana interchange about 1:20 p.m. Sheriff's deputies were already on their way to the scene in response to several calls about a person walking in front of traffic, according to Benton County Sheriff Randall Forsyth.
The teenager was pronounced dead at the scene. The SUV's driver wasn't injured.
Roger Munns, Department of Human Services spokesman says that the teen was being moved, as ordered by a juvenile court, to a shelter in Independence when the incident happened. Munns says that the DHS employee with him tried to prevent the accident and has provided a detailed sequence of events to law enforcement officials who are continuing their investigation.
"This accident is a tragedy, not only for the victim and his family but for the DHS employee on the scene," Munns said in a written statement.
