Tama County jurors will continue deliberations Thursday in the first-degree murder trial of Dustin Jefferson, who is charged with aiding and abetting in the killing of his wife Kerry O'Clair Jefferson Sept. 25, 2013.
Jurors started deliberating Tuesday afternoon following a weeklong trial. Jurors haven't had any questions for the attorneys and judge but they did ask to view the videos of Jefferson's interviews with police after Kerry's death. The jury resumes 9 a.m. Thursday.
Jefferson, 38, is accused of helping his mother Ginger Jefferson, 58, who was convicted in 2014 of first-degree murder. Kerry died from two fatal wounds to the neck and she also had blunt force injuries to her face and head. During closing arguments Tuesday, Assistant Iowa Attorney General Laura Roan told the jury Jefferson wasn't a victim of circumstances. He was at the house when his wife was killed and he had a plan.
'He helped plan (the attack) and participated,” Roan said. 'His knife was used. His bedroom. His knowledge. Her blood was on him. Her fear of him. That's the evidence.”
According to testimony, Kerry was killed in the bedroom of the house at 104 Harmon St., where Jefferson was living at the time. He and Kerry were estranged and her mother testified the couple had a volatile, rocky relationship.
Another witness testified Kerry feared for her life because of search history she found on Jefferson's phone or computer just days before her death.
Roan said Jefferson knew his mother was going to kill his wife.
Tom Gaul, Jefferson's lawyer, in his closing said the prosecution had not met its burden of proof and there was lack of evidence that Jefferson was in the house when Ginger killed Kerry. Gaul noted Ginger never implicated her son.
