Earlier this month, The Gazette published a notice asking Eastern Iowa schools to nominate school holiday community services projects. A group of reporters voted on the submissions, selecting three projects for publication in the newspaper. The following is one of the nominations we received.
Summit Schools pre-kindergarten and third grade students took a bite out of hunger with a food drive to benefit the Linn Community Food Bank.
The 30 students collected nearly 200 non-perishable food items for the food bank, including cereal, infant formula, canned fruits and vegetables, boxed macaroni and cheese, and peanut butter.
The students created posters to drive awareness. They delivered the food to the Linn Community Food Bank, where they got to help assemble orders for people in need.
The food drive was a Y.A.L.E. (Yet Another Learning Experience) service learning project. Laurel Davis is the third grade teacher. Mel Onken is the pre-kindergarten teacher.
Summit Schools is a private preschool and pre-kindergarten through fifth grade school in Cedar Rapids.
Thirty pre-kindergarten and third grade students at Summit Schools collected food for the Linn Community Food Bank. The students took the food to the food bank, where they helped sort it for delivery.
