Summer to bring new test for Iowa City's teen curfew

The jury is still out on Iowa City's curfew for teenagers.
The curfew, which took effect six months ago, says teens can't be out too late at night. Just how late depends on their age.
Police and community leaders expect the ordinance will be tested now that summer has arrived.
The curfew was proposed by the City Council last summer because of juvenile crime, including several brawls.
The ordinance was highly contested amid concerns police would use the curfew to target juveniles of certain races and backgrounds. Police argued the ordinance would simply be a tool for them to use to send juveniles home and keep them out of trouble.
The curfew went into effect Dec. 23, but police gave juveniles a three-month warning period.
