Chunks of asphalt lifted up and water flooded an intersection after a water main broke this morning.
Sixth Street SE remained closed at Fifth Avenue SE at 10 a.m., about an hour after it was first reported. Water is bubbling out of the street, creating depths of about 8-10 inches along the curb.
Workers on the scene said it could be five or six hours before everything is fixed.
“There are pipes going both directions and the ‘T' needs to be cut out,” said John Franson, a water maintenance employee.
Police have blocked traffic over concern that a sinkhole may be below the roadway.
Sixth Street SE is closed between Fourth and Fifth avenues.
