CEDAR RAPIDS - The Cedar Rapids Solid Waste and Recycling Division reminds residents there are various options for dealing with the extra waste created by the holidays.
Residents who need to set out more than the allotted one 35 gallon, 40-pound garbage container must affix a $1.25 sticker to extra containers. Stickers are available at local grocery and convenience stores. A complete listing is posted at www.cedar-rapids.org/solidwaste.
Extra garbage containers that do not have the $1.25 garbage stickers will be tagged and will not be collected.
The division offers these tips for residents to reduce their need to set out an extra bag or container:
-Reuse: While holiday wrapping paper is not recyclable, gift bags can be saved for use next year.
-Recycle: Much of the packaging for toys and clothes can be recycled. Once the plastic film has been removed from packages, the cardboard may be placed in CURBY cart.
Fruit and vegetable peelings from large holiday meal preparation can be collected in paper bags and placed in the YARDY cart. Cold temperatures will keep the peelings from spoiling in the YARDY until pickup.
