The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services has announced the first case of West Nile virus this year.
The person is reported to be a middle age adult (age 41-60 years) from Buena Vista County in northwest Iowa, according to a news release issued Friday. The case was confirmed through a test at the State Hygienic Lab in Coralville.
The announcement came on the eve of Labor Day weekend, when many Iowans venture outdoors. Humans are infected with West Nile virus through a mosquito bite, which means being outside increases the risk for contracting the virus.
HHS is advising all Iowans to take precautions. They include:
- Use insect repellent with DEET, Picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus, Para-menthane-diol, 2-undecanone or IR3535. When using repellent, always read and follow the label. Consult a health care provider if you have questions about using the products on children.
- If possible, avoid outdoor activities between dusk and dawn, when mosquitoes are most active.
- Wear long-sleeved shirts, pants, shoes and socks outdoors whenever possible.
- Eliminate standing water around the home because that’s where mosquitoes lay eggs. Empty water from buckets, cans, pool covers and pet water dishes. Change water in bird baths every three to four days.
HHS reports that in 2021, six Iowans were diagnosed with West Nile virus. There were zero deaths from the illness.
