The Iowa Board of Educational Examiners has found probable cause to investigate allegations that Maquoketa Valley teacher Steven Smith engaged in improper conduct with a female student.
No date has been set for a hearing in the matter, according to board Executive Director George Maurer, who said the board made its finding during its regular meeting on Friday.
Delaware County Sheriff John LeClere had earlier confirmed that a criminal investigation is under way into allegations of improper conduct against Smith, who is on paid administrative leave pending its outcome.
Maquoketa Valley Superintendent Doug Tuetken could not be reached Tuesday to comment on whether the board finding will change the paid status of Smith's administrative leave.
