SOLON - A new building here is offering more consolidation to city staff, as well as more space.
Solon's city staff fully moved in to the new City Hall on May 19, and, after a few tech issues, the building is fully functional.
'Our other building was just kind of a tiny little building,” said Susie Siddell, the Solon city clerk. 'This one feels more like an office, like a City Hall.”
Siddell explained that the older facility did not have any separate rooms, whereas the new building has two extra offices, an office for the city administrator and a larger space for people to gather.
'We actually have our council chambers here,” Siddell said. 'Before we would have our council meetings at our library.”
The Solon City Council held its first city council meeting in the new building on May 21.
'It's an exciting time for Solon,” said Cami Rasmussen, the city administrator, who explained that Solon has been growing exponentially for several years, requiring new infrastructure around the community. The 2010 Census found the town had a population of 2,037, which Rasmussen said is a 73 percent increase since 2000.
'The want, and the desire and the need had been there for sometime,” said Rasmussen on Solon getting a new City Hall, but she added that the finances were not immediately there because of the many other infrastructure projects that needed to be completed.
Construction on the building began in November. Rasmussen said that construction costs for the building totaled $630,279,
