Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program recipients are making more purchases at roadside farm stands, farmers markets and directly from local farmers.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture reported more than $18.8 million was spent by SNAP participants at those outlets in fiscal year 2014, a nearly sixfold increase since 2008.
The number of SNAP-authorized farmers, roadside farm stands, and farmers markets nationally has grown dramatically from 753 in fiscal year 2008 to more than 6,400 in fiscal year 2014.
In Iowa, SNAP redemptions at farmers markets grew from $39,770 to $78,191 during that period. The number of farmers markets and direct marketing farmers increased from 188 to 261.
Through a partnership with the National Association of Farmers Market Nutrition Programs, the USDA provides free wireless equipment to qualifying farmers and farmers markets. The equipment enables them to accept SNAP through electronic benefit transfers.
'Redemptions through farmers and producers nourish local economies, while helping those in underserved neighborhoods,” said U.S. Agriculture Under Secretary Kevin Concannon in a news release. 'Without farmers markets, roadside farm stands and farmers who sell directly to the public, residents of these communities may have to travel to grocery stores outside their area to obtain fresh produce or make-do with processed foods.
'Accepting SNAP benefits also increases the customer base for local producers, adding an extra economic boost to the community.”
In May, the USDA announced the availability of $3.3 million in competitive funding to help farmers markets serve SNAP participants. The awards will be announced in September.
The USDA also recently awarded $31.5 million in funding to local, state, and national organizations to support programs that encourage SNAP participants to buy more fruits and vegetables.
