Smoke from birthday candles at UI bring quite a party
Smoke from birthday cake candles drew some extra attention Wednesday afternoon on the University of Iowa campus.
Four fire trucks, a fire command van, and two University of Iowa Squad cars responded to Becker Communication Studies Building around 2 p.m. after two smoke detectors were set off on the second floor.
Although the initial call was for an automatic fire alarm and required just one truck, the additional alarms called for back-up because of concern there was an actual fire, officials said.
But it turned out to be just a birthday celebration with candles that produced a bit too much smoke, officials said.
The crew was on scene for less than an hour and the building was briefly evacuated.
