Six Johnson County businesses failed alcohol compliance checks Thursday.
Working with the Iowa City Police Department and the Johnson County Sheriff's Office, underage youths entered the businesses and were sold alcoholic beverages.
The Johnson County businesses were: Johncy's Liquor Store, 585 Highway 965 in North Liberty; the Brown Bottle, 125 E. Zeller St. in North Liberty; and Chappy's Dry Dock, 1162 Club Rd. NE in Shueyville.
Those in Iowa City were: Hy-Vee Food Store, 1201 N. Dodge St.; Kum & Go, 25 W. Burlington St.; and Panchero's 32 S. Clinton St.
The offending employees were charged with a simple misdemeanor for selling alcohol to an underage person, punishable by a $735 fine. The violations also are forwarded to the Iowa Alcoholic Beverages Division for a possible civil penalty against the holder of the liquor license.
Forty-three businesses passed the compliance checks.
