Multiple reports of gunshots have police investigating in Daniels Park in Cedar Rapids.
The reports came in around 1:15 p.m. Officers are looking for evidence on the south end of the park near the splash pad.
Lt. Kenneth Washburn confirmed the investigation and said no injuries have been reported.
“We're still in the early stages of the investigation,” Washburn said.
Dan Michels, 45, who lives across the street from the park, said he was watching TV when he heard at least 10 to 12 shots in succession.
Other neighbors reported hearing a similar number of shots.
Crime scene investigators have placed 16 yellow markers in the grass near the parking lot and splash pad on the south edge of the park.
“We're not real sure who or what the suspects were shooting at,” Lt. Kenneth Washburn said. “We're in the process of looking for evidence, finding whatever evidence we can out here and following up on leads.”
Police calls to the park are up in recent weeks, police told KCRG-TV9 earlier this week. Sgt. Cristy Hamblin said police have been called to the park more than 100 times since May 1. Neighbors have expressed concern to the police and local media.
Michels, who has lived in the neighborhood for five years, said the park is often a place for fights on summer evenings.
“It's getting pretty old,” Michels said. “It's getting pretty old. It's a nice neighborhood. But every year it seems to be getting a little worse.”
