Cedar Rapids firefighters were too late to save a storage shed behind Donutland from a fire early Thursday afternoon, but the fire was stopped there.
According to Greg Buelow, Cedar Rapids public safety communications coordinator, firefighters responded at 2:53 p.m. to 4307 Center Point Road for a report of a shed on fire behind Donutland.
The fire was extinguished, but Buelow said the shed was a 'total loss” with a nearby shed also sustaining some fire and heat damage from the blaze. Buelow said investigators believe the fire was started by 'carelessly discarded smoking materials that ignited leaves next to the shed.”
There were no injuries reported in the incident, according to Buelow.
Engine 1 was moved to the new Cedar Rapids Central Fire Station on Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2013, as crews began responding out of the new station. (Liz Martin/The Gazette)
