Several pigs were hurt when a semi-trailer truck tipped onto its side and blocked traffic on Interstate 80 late Monday, authorities said.
Jason S. Epp, 41, of Canada, was exiting from southbound Interstate 380 to eastbound I-80 around 9 p.m., but his turn was too sharp and the semi tipped over, according to the Iowa State Patrol. Epp was not hurt.
The 82 pigs in the trailer were on their way to market in Illinois, authorities said. Four of them got loose after the crash, but soon found mud created by rain earlier in the day. Authorities were unsure how many of the hogs were hurt or possibly killed.
Epp was charged with failure to maintain control. The wreckage blocked one lane of traffic until it could be cleaned up.
