Second arrest made in Cedar Rapids duck killing

Police have arrested a second man in the killing of nearly 50 ducks at the Bever Park petting zoo last June.

Shayne Smalling, 19, of Twenty-nine Palms, Calif., was arrested Tuesday and charged with livestock abuse, an aggravated misdemeanor, and second-degree criminal mischief, a class D felony. Smalling turned himself in at the Cedar Rapids Police Department and was taken to the Linn County Jail.

Smalling is a member of the United States Marine Corps, but was not a Marine at the time of the incident, police said.

Smalling is the second person to be arrested in the case. Zachary Kanellis, 19, was arrested last month.

A park caretaker discovered vandalism at the zoo on June 25, 2008, and found the bodies of 50 ducks and geese, which had been beaten and stoned to death sometime the night before. The cages had been locked at about 5:30 p.m. June 24, and when workers arrived at about 7 a.m. June 25, they found the building lock had been broken as well as the lock on the cages.
