IOWA CITY - The Salvation Army of Johnson County has launched its 'Food for the Soul” campaign in hopes of raising $10,000 to support the agency's soup kitchen.
Money is being collected in July and August - months during which The Salvation Army sees an increased demand for its services because children are out of school.
The Salvation Army of Johnson County's Soup Kitchen was established in 1993. It is open from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. Meals are provided for free.
The goal of the Soup Kitchen is to help the less fortunate members of the community, including the elderly, unemployed, underemployed, poor and homeless be fed. With a 'no questions asked” policy more than 70 meals are served per day, according to the organization.
'We hold on to the belief that, while we may not be able to help everyone, we will support as many as we can.” said Capt. Tim North.
Donations to assist in the feeding of those in need can be mailed to or made at 1116 S. Gilbert Court, Iowa City, IA 52240.
Online donations can be made at ICSalvationArmy.org.
