Tighter budgets at home meet tighter budgets in the classroom. That's why Iowa City Community School District held a fun run, 5k and 10K walk, and half marathon to raise money for educational activities and equipment. Hundreds of parents, students, and district staff members put on their sneakers to raise the funds. It's all in an effort to assure kids have more learning opportunities inside and outside of a traditional classroom setting.
“We just decided to help out,” said runner Deanna Ballew.
Hundreds hit the streets in Iowa City Sunday morning to raise money for the local school district.
“The run for the schools provide extra funding for the school district during these tough economic times so it's great to see all these people out here supporting a great cause,” said ICCSD Parent Tuyet Dorau.
Some came with added pressure.
“It's hot, it's hot and it's hard,” said North Liberty Firefighter Eric Ransom.
Two North Liberty Firefighters decided to wear their 60-pound gear while running a 5k.
“Not only for children's awareness it allows us to give back to the community and get back from it,” said North Liberty firefighter Greg Hankins.
Others upped the ante to a 10k like Deanna Ballew.
“All kids everywhere need help with schools so if we can't help out kids in school and raise money that's awesome,” said Ballew.
“My legs feel like jello,” said ICCSD student Alec Dorau.
Money raised for kids like junior high school student Alec Dorau.
“Some of the textbooks we have aren't that new so it'll be good to get some new books,” said Dorau.
Money for other equipment that's badly needed.
“There's an overhead projector from the the Gulf War so it's kind of old,” said Dorau.
The Dorau's dog, Lucy won first place for the canine division. But it's not about the winners and losers, but the school district and its students who'll get some much needed assistance.
“We'll do it again next year,” said Dorau.
100 percent of funding will support all the Iowa City area schools. The money is then used to support field trips, guest speakers, and new learning tools.
Kids take off at the beginning of the one-mile raced held Sunday October, 17 2010 in Iowa City. The event was part of 'Race for the Schools' which attracted more then 2,000 participants in its half-mile, one mile, 5K, 10K, and half marathon races. (Becky Malewitz/ SourceMedia Group News)
