GREEN BAY, Wis. - The Green Bay Gamblers scored twice in the first period and went on to beat the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders, 2-0, Wednesday night in USHL hockey.
The Riders outshot their opponent by a 37-18 margin but couldn't get a puck past Green Bay goaltender Jason Pawloski. Cedar Rapids (21-7) plays Friday night at Dubuque and hosts Bloomington the following night.
Brent Gates Jr., son of the former major league baseball infielder, scored a power-play goal 3:25 into the game, then Jake Kauppila made it 2-0 five minutes later. That was the end of the scoring.
The RoughRiders were without forwards Adam Gaudette (suspension), Erik Foley (sickness) and goalie Ben Blacker (sickness).
