REPLAY LIVE EVENT: Linn County votes to forgive taxes for flood victims

Sep. 2, 2009 12:40 pm
The Linn County Supervisors unanimously approved a measure to forgive property taxes for flood victims who were deprived of the use of their property.
That applies to all areas of the county except Palo, where property owners will get a 20 percent abatement for each of the next five years.
The other exception in the vote is that anyone whose taxes f were reimbursed by insurance or gov't assistance will not get abatement for that.
Tax bills due Sept. 1 cover the period that started less than a month after the flood, from July to December 2008. A decision on abatements was hastened when tax bills were mailed to residents in August, and a committee of city, county and school district officials has worked for weeks to find a solution.
