REPLAY LIVE COVERAGE: Everclear hearing in Iowa City
Diane Heldt
Feb. 25, 2010 3:00 pm
Gazette reporter Diane Heldt is providing live coverage of today's public forum in Iowa City, hosted by the Iowa Alcoholic Beverages Commission, to gather input on Everclear and other high alcohol content liquors sold in the state.
The forum started at 2:30 p.m. Thursday in room 337 of the Iowa Memorial Union on the University of Iowa campus. The commission will hold a meeting in addition to the public forum, and the body is expected to draft final recommendations on highly concentrated alcohol, according to the Iowa ABD Web site. The commission also is gathering public input on its Web site.
Iowa officials began discussing a possible ban or restrictions on the sale of Everclear and similar liquors after a Drake University student last year was hospitalized after drinking Everclear in what officials said was a fraternity hazing incident.
Check out Diane's live blog below.
Everclear is a high alcohol concentration grain alcohol. The liquor comes in two concentrations: 151-proof and 190-proof. Several states prohibit the sale of the 190-proof variety. The beverage is used as fuel in certain backpacking and camping stoves. (Jim Slosiarek/The Gazette)
